Arts and Crafts

During Pipeline 2013, I was able to do some incredible arts and crafts that are important to my culture. I made a clapper stick, a drum, an arrowhead, an arrow, and a basket. I wanted the final photo of my basket that I finished on Sunday because I’ve never made a basket as unique as this one. I have never used a shell like the one I used this weekend, nor pine needles. What made my basket so special was the fact that it was made in the Chumash Village in Malibu, California; a place so special and sacred. My heart jumped into this basket and told me to make handles, so I did. As I was making my basket, I kept thinking of my nieces at home who find an interest with the arts and crafts I do. I thought about their smiles and how happy they will be when they see my basket as well as my other crafts
especially my drum! I really miss my little girls and want to go home to see them, but I know God will give me the strength to continue and finish the program. In the meantime, here is the “special” basket I made this weekend that I love so much

Malibu Retreat

We just got back from visiting the Chumash Village in Malibu, California, and I had an amazing time! I seriously cannot fit everything in one little blog! I enjoyed every single minute of our stay over in Malibu and learning about the Chumash culture. When they welcomed us as we entered the village, we felt so loved. Learning to surf was incredible and super scary! I was so scared to go out in the water, but I did, and the waves were perfect! I enjoyed being by the ocean for three days straight because I never get to see the ocean that often. Morning sunrise was difficult to wake up to, but I am thankful that Robertjohn took the time to help us learn about sunrise ceremony. The food was delicious!!! I can’t stop thinking of the wonderful food they fed us over there! I am thankful for going to Malibu this past weekend because I know the whole Pipeline and the Chumash people bonded really well together. Sorry I am not putting a lot down, but I am really tired and need to wash my clothes…so I will write later!

Alysha’s Biography

Hello, Pipeline 2013! It feels nice to come back to Pitzer for another year, especially when there are five other people that I already know. I never really got to write a bio blog, so this is me: my name is Alysha White. I am from the DinĂ© Nation in Windowrock, Arizona. My mom comes from St. Michael’s and my dad comes from Ganado. I currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico and go to school at Volcano Vista High School
home of the Hawks! I am an auntie of two lovely little girls, Calisyana Brenda and Caleila Waniyetu; they are my loves and my life, and being away from them is really hard for me to deal with, but I know they are safe and sound at home, waiting patiently for me to return. I love movies and television
I enjoy watching and writing shows because one day, I hope to become one of the producers behind the scenes. I really would love to go to New York University when I graduate high school and study film production and creative writing. I enjoy talking and getting to know people. I believe I have interesting stories when I think of them, but as of now, I have nothing to say…but I know stuff will come soon!

I have had a super fun time here at Pipeline 2013 and can’t wait to see what future events we are going to venture on this week
!

Last Day at Native Pipeline-Alysha

Today is our last day together. Tomorrow, I will be leaving early in the morning in order ot catch my flight at 6:30 A.M., but it isn’t that bad because at least I will get home around lunch time. It sucks, though, because I start school on Monday, so my summer is officially over. But I spent my summer well: I got to go to St. Paul, Minnesota for a graduation and I got to spend three days at the Mall of America and Nickelodeon Universe. I also got to travel to Gambier, Ohio for a summer program called “College Horizons”, which was an exciting experience because I had a connecting flight in Chicago, Illinios…and let me tell you: the airport in Chicago was amazing and there were so many Blues Brothers-related things to buy!! And finally, I got to drive here to Claremont, California, which was nice because I got to go through the Mojave Desert, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and the beach and Pier. Can’t believe this is the last day of the program. I will definitely miss everyone and their personalities. Thank you for allowing me to be myself and be funny around everyone. I won’t forget my experience. 🙂 ❀ ❀
