The events and field trips that Scott has lined up for this summer’s Pipeline Program are pretty cool. I know you haven’t seen the schedule yet so I’m just gonna post some highlights for you to enjoy and be excited over now.

Some highlights:

A Visit to  NBC & Universal Studios

NBC Studio is known for being the home of the long-running The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Universal Studios, the oldest movie studio in the U.S., is one of the six major movie studios. Some famous movies/shows that came from Universal are: Jurassic Park, the Flinstones & the Bourne Series.

A Visit to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory mainly constructs and operates robots that are sent to explore nearby planets. They are also responsible for operating the Mars Science Laboratory Mission, Mars Exploration Rovers, missions to the Moon & more!

A Spoken Word Workshop and Special Concert by Red Cloud/Crystal Lighting

Red Cloud and Crystal Lightning are a L.A. based Hip Hop group that mixes Electro with Hip Hop to create their own unique sound. Their workshop uses the power of music to heal and empower Native youth. They will be performing a special Concert at Pitzer. (I’ll be posting some of their music later. It’s really good.)

A Tour of Yangna/The L.A. River

I bet you didn’t know that L.A. had a river. I sure didn’t until a couple of months ago. Yangna is the early L.A. settlement by the Tongva before the arrival of the Spanish. A Tour of Yangna and the L.A. River are sure to expand your knowledge of the history of L.A., as well as a chance to explore the past.

I hope these events have you excited and ready for the other events, field trips, workshops, and speakers at the 2012 Pitzer American Indian Summer Pipeline!

  1. Thank you for posting the schedule!

I would also like to introduce myself. My name is Camryn Zappaterra and I am a Masters student at Claremont Lincoln University in interreligious chaplaincy, studying to become an interfaith medical chaplain. I have been working with the Lakota peoples for a number of years around issues of health and wellness, and I am excited at the opportunity to be involved in education. I agree with Alex’s posting (at the end of May), that being a masters student has it similar fears to undergraduate in the novelty of teachers, colleagues, and course material, but after a year under my belt of graduate school, I have to say, it’s possible and well worth it! The rewards out weigh the challenges.

I am grateful and excited to work with the incoming students, and most of all I look forward to meeting all the incoming students!

    Sincerely,
    Camryn
