I appreciated all the mentors, teachers, and the elders. They taught and helped us youth with a lot of things. Like our common app essay, teaching us song and sharing stories with us. I loved meeting a bunch of new people.
I really liked being at wishtoyo, it helped all of us students and mentors bond. It was fun learning all the songs and stories from the Chumash people, and other tribes, this program was a very fun, exciting experience and would definitely join the program again.
The last few days we have been doing a lot of activities. One Of my favorite activities was the “native portrait photoshop project.” I liked how we all took turns taking the photos, directing, and being the “documentarian.” I also really liked the basket weaving because it’s always a good skill to know how to do, so I have a little bowl to hold change or any other small objects. My most favorite was going to limuw Island. It was very beautiful, I really liked snorkeling, and being in the beach, it was a good way to bond with everyone that went, and I seen some animals up close that I have never seen before. (Dolphins, a blue whale, and a bunch of different fish)
Yesterday we took pictures for a “native portrait project.” I picked a sunset on a mountain top, with the sunset behind it. My pose was like meditation/ calm, and I captioned it “Mind Over Matter.” I picked this caption because it has a zen vibe.
Just got back from wishtoyo yesterday. It was my first time being there and on Limu island. We did a lot of fun things, like story telling/songs, snorkeling, kayaking, shucked abalone, and it gave us all a chance to bond with each other. The Island was very beautiful, and it was my first time being in the island, snorkeling, and we seen dolphins up close along the way. It was a very interesting experience. And I would definitely do it again.
Today was my first time watching the movie, it was very informational about where the sport lacrosse came about and where it originated. I really liked the film, I knew about the game lacrosse, but I never knew the game was that spiritual. Since the sixth nation did not want to use a Canadian or a U.S passport they always have problems traveling, and the chance of them making it to the games were very slim at times.
Today was an interesting but slow day. I really liked the “flower wars” game, iv never played it or even heard of it before. The game took a lot of communication, looking out for other people, and strategy. Some of these techniques we used in the “flower wars” could help us with the environmental and indigenous rights issues , by communicating with other people get more people involved with water rights, land, food sovereignty, and air quality.
