I miss the Chumash Village especially the ceremony night when the family’s and the elders came. We got to spend time with them and show them what we have learned by singing for them with our clapper sticks and drums. It was really funny seeing everyone have a great time while waiting for our families.
The food from the chumash people was really good. Even though we waked up early, got sunburned and got sand in some sand in our stuff, we were never starving. On the last day the bacon for our breakfast was ready right when we were about to leave. We all just grab a good hand full for our two-hour drive home. Even though none of us had a legit bed, we ate like we were at home. 🙂
(Chumash Village): Complete Fun! I want to go back so badly even though the shower next to the beach was VERY COLD! I did feel like I was Bear Grylls for roughing it out for 3 days. Also the Food.. Sooo good reminds me of back home. Another thing I wanted to bring up was surfing for the first time EVER! It was super duper fun and I am going to try it again some other time in the future. Saying see you later too the Chumash people was hard due to the fact that they felt like family and I will miss them until I come back to the Village: D
During Pipeline 2013, I was able to do some incredible arts and crafts that are important to my culture. I made a clapper stick, a drum, an arrowhead, an arrow, and a basket. I wanted the final photo of my basket that I finished on Sunday because I’ve never made a basket as unique as this one. I have never used a shell like the one I used this weekend, nor pine needles. What made my basket so special was the fact that it was made in the Chumash Village in Malibu, California; a place so special and sacred. My heart jumped into this basket and told me to make handles, so I did. As I was making my basket, I kept thinking of my nieces at home who find an interest with the arts and crafts I do. I thought about their smiles and how happy they will be when they see my basket as well as my other crafts…especially my drum! I really miss my little girls and want to go home to see them, but I know God will give me the strength to continue and finish the program. In the meantime, here is the “special” basket I made this weekend that I love so much…
Today we went to Western University, the car ride there was very interesting. Since we would rock the van every red light and watch other people’s reaction was funny as hell. It reminds me of my own reservation’s summer program and how we always rocked the van on road trips. Anyways, we learned about food and fitness over there. Sort of ironic how I ate unhealthy today with chips and Kit Kats as well as McDonald’s for dinner… oh well. I still do miss Malibu, I miss my Chumash family and I miss the sacred village. Especially the 5-minute walk to the beautiful beach. It was nice how the welcomed us into their village with such open arms and felt family like after the second day. I hope to go back soon after Pipeline program for camping or something similar to that. N****
Hello once again people from Pitzer college pipeline today was ok because I tried to get some sleep and I got an hour out of 12 hours of sleep I need lol so I’m pretty bummed and half asleep typing this. We went to western today and it was realllyyyy fun we got to learn about nutrition and how to eat healthy and stay fit to get the human body to keep it going. They told us about a guy who eats peanuts and apples in the morning and runs 10 miles each day ‘m thought this guy was nuts and he was young but he actually looks 50 and he’s 70 years old and I didn’t be leave it at all but some how I do. Then Dr. told us that we will be cooking at her house and we are going to cook today and what was cool was I like to cook time to time so I was stoked. So when we got to the place where we are cooking we started to figure out what we were going to make, we decided to make tortillas like our moms make it since we were in a group of three. Our first attempt was a failure because it was too much doughy then we made another and it had to much flour it was hard making a tortilla but it was a very fun experience to have and memory. Then we came back to college and did our regular routine. It was a very tiring day but also fun. Thank You
You all haven’t arrived yet, but you will be here in two days~! Then we will only have two weeks, time will fly. I hope our time together is memorable and…
. . . . .
. . . .
I was unable to finish this post before you all came. These times of course will be memorable.. but what else? Short? Difficult? maybe even exciting. How was I to know it would turn up like this. We are in our second week, tired, becoming close knit, and appreciative of what we learn together.
In some ways this experience is reminding me of my undergrad years, especially freshman year. Everything and everyone is new, its exciting to be in this place, to see new faces and hear about others’ lives. Each and everyone of us carry different stories and yet now in this second week we have created a family. That was fast. With such connection I believe it should be cherished and nourished for as long as possible. My wish is that throughout our lives we will grow closer and rely on one another from time to time. Know that if you need to talk to someone, advice on academia or social life, I will be here. And I’m sure the same is for my counterparts: Amanda, Chuck and Sean. Malibu Group Photo
