Resources and Support to get to College

You’re resources on going to college is first up to you. You’ll always have friends and family to help guide you. You’re gonna have to ask yourself “is attending college important in my life?” You are the only one to decide to continue your education. When you have decided to attend college you must have a plan and ask questions to prepare yourself on what to expect. I have chosen to further my education by being involved academically, socially, culturally and athletically. This gives me a sense of motivation and support from my peers. I accepted the challenge to go to college and use the best of my abilities to become a role model for my siblings and Native youth enrolled in my tribe. I encourage the other Indigenous Youth!

Reflection:

Today was truly heartfelt from listening to the elders who’ve traveled far to be here with us. I am truly grateful to have them around and continuing their stories and traditions. Also supporting us to do the same.

Challenging the Indigenous to go to College

What makes it hard for Native American students to attend college?

1. You will have self doubt.

Never doubt yourself, everyone deserves an education!

2. You struggle with the thoughts of money.

Grasp all the opportunities school and your tribe will provide you with. (scholarships, financial aid, ect.)

3. Leaving your family, friends and home.

It’ll be hard to attend school missing your loved ones, but make them proud!

4. Struggling with applications, essays and grades.

The hard work will pay off!

5. Surrounded by no motivation.

Surround yourself with others who want to pursue the same path.

Reflection:

Todays’s reading in “The absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian”

I related to the story that growing up on the reservation is tough but if you want a better insight your future. If you’re looking at where you’re at, and its not where you want to be , that should be enough motivation to reach for your goals.

Reflection

Today I learned…

How I tell my story. I told my story to one person, all they did was listen. I realized, sometimes you just need someone to listen. I also heard them tell me their story, I seen how everyone one goes through hard times, struggles, and self-doubt… but it’s your choice to do something about it. I loved to see all the indigenous youth in the pipeline program step up and further their learning. Becoming role models for younger ones to look up to. Pursue their dreams and goals. Just knowing we all support you. We’re listening.

Ayee It’s Mika

Let’s start off with an introduction. My name is Mika Jade and I am 17 years old. I am from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota. I am Dakota/Lakota. I live on a reservation with about 2,000 proud Native Americans. I like to be involved socially, culturally, and athletically.

I wanted to be in the Pitzer Pipeline Program because i knew this program was gonna help me finish college, give me a better insight into the university life, and be prepared to go to college.

Today, was a pretty slow day. I met most of the students, it’s a pretty small group, and hopefully I get to know more about our tribes and work together by the end of the program.
