So today the students graduate from the Pipeline program I hope each of them truly understands how amazing they each are. Amber, Christa, Elka, Fabian,Jana, Jessica, Kapele, Manny , Monica, and Skyla – it has been a pleasure getting to know each of you and watching you explore your options for the future. I look forward to saying I once mentored the first Native American woman president, the top nero-psychologist or world-renowned mechanical engineer. you all can do anything you set your minds to. Aim high and find the things you enjoy. Continue reading “Last official day”
These are a few of my favorite things.
Thursday: Today we visited Cal Poly Pomona (yay!) Dr. Dixon gave us a tour of the campus and Irv Harrison of the Native Center treated us to a nice lunch. I love the campus- its full of living things like cows, horses, ducks, and turtles. I just graduated from there in June so it was like going back home, I really grew a lot while attending school so being back there brought many good memories back. Dr. Walton showed us chemistry can be fun and exciting- showing us how to turn pennies into gold and silver. We then took a look at the Native garden near the bio-trek, i love the natural plants- the smell is soothing. After that we walked to the Native Center- a place I practically lived in the last year of school. Mr. Harrison has made some amazing changes and it was good to see a friendly face (Manny)! Then we were off once again this time to drive over to the farm store where Nick and Alex made sure to extol the virtues of Cal Poly’s orange juice. After dinner we relaxed and watch one of my favorite Native films- Smoke Signals based on some short stories titled The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie. I always love the way the movie allows people to see some of the stereotypes placed on Natives . As we draw near the end of our two weeks together I am beginning to reflect not only on what i and the students have learned from the lessons but also the things we have shared and taught each other.
Pipeline Recap
Alright so today is day 12 of the program and we have really experienced a lot! The amazing people that have taken time to speak with us about their journey to the professional arena has been both insightful and inspiring. Even though I just received my B.A. I now feel like I CAN decide to do whatever I want in this life- i will no longer limit my options to things I think are related to my major. I also realized that everyone is different and perhaps their needs are different from what mine are. It is good to be able to remember not everyone is going to get my personality and to be able to be alright with that. I also am grateful to hear so many diverse voices out in the “real’ world.- Becca
Western University
Today we visited Western University- our host Kellie really set up a great visit. We were able to practice a bit of medicine on one another- some of us enjoyed some muscle manipulating. Then we enjoyed lunch. After that we toured the vet school where students took turns practicing sutures, giving shots and examines to “animals.” Then it was time for the activity we all had talked the most about- an opportunity to examine real human body parts- like brains, lungs, and hearts. The best part (for me) was seeing the different hearts; one had a pacemaker in it still and another had calcification which had hardened the aorta valves. Another highlight was the sidewalk art around – they looked like real people doing things like reading papers, playing with dogs and painting. Finally we had a chance to speak with med students and hear what commitment it takes to practice medicine. Hopefully we will have some future medical students (Christa) 😉
Pitzer Pipeline
Ok so we are on day 3 of the program I am amazed at these students! The hour and a half car ride today was made enjoyable by insightful compelling conversation, punch bug, yellow car fever and outta-state mayhem. Thanks guys! The students are busy blogging, capturing pictures and videos all while learning about Native culture and college opportunities. Tomorrow we travel to Western medical to look at dead bodies ;P
