Mural-ing at Pitzer

Who wants to draw/paint/create a mural at Pitzer?

The Community Engagement Center (CEC) has asked two Pitzer students to facilitate a mural project reflecting “community engagement.” So this means that all the groups that work with the CEC will have a chance to design their own section of the mural; this includes Pipeline!

We will be getting together on September 30th at Pitzer to create our section of the mural. (We won’t be actually painting or drawing on the walls yet; we are still waiting for the construction to be finished.) We still want input from you; designs, ideas, drawings, etc!!

To help your ideas, try to figure out what the answers to the questions below mean to you and draw that.

“What does community engagement mean to you? How do you want to represent your personal and collective notions of community engagement?”

Please let us know by the 28th whether you will be coming or not.

Thanks!  Elizabeth

A Ton of Events!

Hello everyone,

Pipeline is definitely not over, even though Graduation was on the 11th. We have a ton of events planned to keep our Pipeline Family together; events range from Pomona Convocation on September 4th to College Admission and FAFSA classes to visiting the San Manuel Powwow in October.

Mark your calendars and prepare to come out!

“A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”

I remember waking up. I looked to my cell phone that was under my pillow and the numbers read 5:57am. I groaned and tossed out of my bed thinking I had to get up or i’ll be late for ceremony. I thought about how Mariah would have to come into the room to get me out of bed if I didn’t hurry up. The room was dark but I knew that right across the room was Elka, my room mate. I yelled in a soft tone, “Hey! We have to get up.” I heard no response and stumbled to my drawer where my clothes were. I tried opening them but they wouldn’t roll out like their supposed to. I tried again and this time I pulled out the drawer out of the dresser. It fell to the floor and I winced at the sound. I turned and looked towards Elka, but she didn’t wake up.

I gave a huff, started picking up the clothes that fell out, and chose the ones that I was going to wear today. After getting dressed I went out of the room to brush my teeth but as I walked out I bumped into something really hard. My nose hurt and started tingle, I put my hands against the wall that should not have been there. I thought that maybe I was too tired and went to far to the right, so I ran my hand to the left knowing the bathroom door should be right there next to it. I walked along the wall for a little while and finally found the bathroom. Maybe I was walking really slow, that’s why it took so long to get to the door. I brushed my teeth and walked back into the room to grab my phone. I checked it again and it was 6:47am.

Man, time went really fast and I was ready to go. Every morning I knew that if we were already to go that we would meet in the common room (our personal little living room). So I walked out of the room straight for the living room and bumped into another wall, I must’ve been really tired. Once I reached the living room I sat on the couch, closed my eyes, and waited for everyone else to get up. When I opened my eyes i was in MY living room…dressed in the very same clothes that I had put on a while ago…………….. a dream is a wish your heart makes. I can’t wait till next year for my dream to be real 🙂

Beautiful Ceremony!

Wow…your graduation ceremony was  beautiful…..you are all amazing….I was truly moved by your songs, your drums and shawls, your powerful words – each of spoke from your heart. We have much to learn from all of you.  It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with each of you this summer and I hope you will keep us updated on this blog about your next adventures.  Best wishes to those of you that are starting a new chapter in your education by attending college this fall, may your transition be exciting and without too many bumps….keep us informed!  To the rest….you have an exciting time to dream of the school you will like to attend after high school.

We have uploaded some of the graduation photos to Flicker and there are still more to come so keep checking. And Edwin and I are working on getting the rest of your digital books up on ISSUU as well and I am adding a link to our ISSUU library on the sidebar of the blog.

For now…..safe journey forward to all of you!

Last Day at Native Pipeline-Alysha

Today is our last day together. Tomorrow, I will be leaving early in the morning in order ot catch my flight at 6:30 A.M., but it isn’t that bad because at least I will get home around lunch time. It sucks, though, because I start school on Monday, so my summer is officially over. But I spent my summer well: I got to go to St. Paul, Minnesota for a graduation and I got to spend three days at the Mall of America and Nickelodeon Universe. I also got to travel to Gambier, Ohio for a summer program called “College Horizons”, which was an exciting experience because I had a connecting flight in Chicago, Illinios…and let me tell you: the airport in Chicago was amazing and there were so many Blues Brothers-related things to buy!! And finally, I got to drive here to Claremont, California, which was nice because I got to go through the Mojave Desert, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and the beach and Pier. Can’t believe this is the last day of the program. I will definitely miss everyone and their personalities. Thank you for allowing me to be myself and be funny around everyone. I won’t forget my experience. 🙂 ❤ ❤

The last days of our journeys together !!

When i first walked into the  dorm, I knew  I was safe and I was going to have a strong relationship  with everyone i met here in the pipeline program. The experience  at the Native pipeline program  was really  helpful with family support, love, sharing each others cultures, and just getting to know each others personal history. This experience made us more connected with one another . I learned a lot about  different educational workshops  also that included medical resources, diabetes issues, dancing routines with each other, which was really awesome to expirence. The program had a lot of wonderful activities and culture traditional teachings. The most thing that really was important to me was the support from all  the mentors, the students , and  Gal  for giving the time to help me in any way she can . I also want to thank scott for all his help for making this happen for us to be here and the others who i do not know. The knowledge i have from this program and  the support from everyone in the program . I will take it with me and share the knowledge , family support, with others who are indeed for help and love . I also just want to cherish the people in this program for the kindness and love  for one another and  the support that they need in life to keep moving forward. Last night was really special  because of the sweat I had with the students and some of the mentors.  It awakend me and gave me more strength to move forward.

I didn’t expect it to come this fast-Ashley

These two weeks have been the fastest and the best. It’s sad to say that it’s coming to an end. I feel like I have grown as a person, with both my knowledge and culture. I truly am going to miss everyone from the friends I made to the mentors who helped to take care of us and made this an enjoyable experience. And to everyone who set this program up. I will never forget the songs, ceremonies, and the sweat lodge. Everything was just beyond amazing and I hope to come back next year.

Deez fooz

Oh my gosh! It’s the last day, this is so weird! No me gusta :[

I’m going to miss seeing every single one of you every day. You were all such awesome, supportive and fun people to be around. I learned a lot from each and every one of you and I’m glad to have met you and learned about your cultures and where you came from. I had so much fun and I hope to see you all again. I’m glad most of you live nearby haha we should all meet up at one of the pow wows or something!

Also, I went to the sweat lodge last night and it was the most amazing experience. I’m proud of myself for lasting all 4 rounds! I can’t wait to go again, I am so grateful to the ones that allowed us to sweat with them and gave us that amazing opportunity and especially to Tony Certa who lead us. We were in good hands, I can’t begin to describe how grateful I am to have them as our friends and teachers.

Overall, I feel like I ended the program off perfectly. I can’t wait to make more memories with all of you on our last day. I’m going to cherish every last moment (:
