My first steps onto the Pitzer campus this morning, were filled with nervousness and fear. I was consumed with worry because of the fact that I didn’t know anyone attending. I was immediately comforted as I was checking in and recognized some familiar faces. Upon meeting more friends I gained a surge of strength. Everyones’ openness and friendly attitudes made me feel welcomed and even more comfortable. Today’s activities made today pass by very quickly. Every hour we were learning and trying something new. I am extremely appreciative of the speakers we had today and was able to connect with them. One of my favorite activities today occurred after lunch when we had indigenous games. We were taught how to protect ourselves which I find important in this day and age. I felt extremely empowered as a woman knowing I can defend myself. After this activity, we had a circle talk with elder Julia about the rocks we have in our lives. This topic made me think deeply and realize the importance of appreciating those people we have in our lives that prove to be our rocks. I will forever know my rocks as my mother, father, and brother.

Marissa’s first day!!!!!!

Hey everyone my name is Marissa and I am Gablieno Tongva from the LA Basin. I am from San Bernardino and can speak a bit of my language. Today was a great way to start off this experience. All the students and their parents were gathered and checking into their rooms and settling in while I was meeting new people and getting to know my piers. Around 10:30 we all met up for the opening ceremony and introduced our selfs as we embraced each others presence. Two common tribes that were there were the Navajo and the Gablieno Tongvas. We had wrapped up the ceremony and everyone said all of their fare wells to their families. About an hour later we had Val as a speaker, and she talked about her back round and i was really touched by how she was able to speak about all the trauma that had happened in her life. Soon after we all gathered to make dream pillows which was ran by my great grandmother, Julia Bogany. Noon came by and we all gathered in the cafeteria to eat lunch, which is where I met my roomie and my friends from last year. We all laughed and had a good time. With our filled stomachs we headed back to the room above the cafeteria which is where we did Indigenous games. As we did the Indigenous games I learned many things. One being that having the ability to do self defense and use it in emergencies is a huge benefit. Before blogging time we did the circle with my great grandmother, Julia Bogany. As we were speaking in the circle it felt very powerful because I got to listen to who was important in everyones life and even got to listen to some back round stories of my piers. I was touched because there had been so many different age groups that were important to people whether they were younger siblings or great great grandparents. Over all I would like to thank everyone who did workshops today and took the time to teach us all and show us their ways.
Arlene’s First Day! July 6, 2018
Hello Everyone that’s reading this, I’m Arlene McDonald from Lancaster. We drove here and got to meet new people. After orientation, my family said their goodbyes and left to go to the beach. I settled into our dorm then did IceBreaker. The game was fun but hard to remember everything what other people said. After we ate lunch we made a dream pillow. We had a speaker named Val come in and talk about her experiences, what she dose, etc. She was very inspiring to never stop and keep trying. We ate dinner after that, the did Martial Arts with Hector. He taught us self defense moves and it was fun. That was my day!
Ja-Rey in the NY2C house
My name is Ja-Rey and this is bits of the story of my first day at pitzer’s Native Youth To College Program.
After my arrival to the parking lot of Pitzer, I stepped out of the car to be greeted with this very gross feeling of hot air. It was motionless and dry but it didn’t dampen my anticipation for the program. At the check in table I was about to scope out some of the students I would be spending the next 14 days with. My momma was about to walk me to the dorm I was assigned and help me get situated. It was air conditioned so you know we were thankful, we had carried my luggage up four flights of stairs in double digit weather. This was my highlight of today cause it was kind of like a flash to the future. We talked about how similar the moment I leave to college would be to this one. I was glad my mother was there for support. Its only been a day and i’m very thankful for the opportunities I will find here at NY2C.
Kevin’s First Day
Today was a very fun day for me because I was able to meet new people and old friends within this program. I was very nervous when I got dropped off here because I have some important things to do today and the days to come in and out of home. When I met my mentor I believed that he will be one of the most important person here including my roommate and others in my group. The activities that we did today helped me realize more on how everyone is different but can suffer from the same problems or rejoist about their accomplishments. As for the other activity that we did towards the end of the day witch was martial arts was very fun because I got to do it again with the same people as last time within indignations and new people. For the food that I ate it wasn’t that much that I ate but, at least that I didn’t over do it as the previous day I was here.
nathen’s first day
my thoughts on my experiences at Pitzer collage so far is going great im learning so many other cultures and im happy that im meeting everyone here.
Tlaloc’s great start
My arrival to the parking lot of the Pitzer campus was filled with so much excitement, the likes of which I have not experienced in some time. I was blessed to meet such wonderful people with whom I plan to form meaningful connections. It was also a joy seeing and greeting friends and elders from the previous year. Today was filled a lot of emotion that I hope to see escalate during the rest of the program. This year’s program seems it will be filled with passion and a sense of eagerness to want to learn more and more as the program progresses. I am looking forward to see how much more I will and and forming more meaningful memories.

Jimmy’s Awesome First Day at Pitzer

My first day here in NY2C, was great. I saw some new people and i got to my room then waited until we went to the auditorium for the ceremony. We went to the ceremony and saw some new people and all of us students introduced ourselves to the other parents and to the Mentors. THen we went to lunch and we had fun and ate food and we went to the third floor and a lady came in and talk to us about life and the experiences she and her grandmother had and talk to us about how to relieve stress. Then we made up a story and ate popsicles. Then we went to the cafeteria and ate dinner then after we got done eating we went to the third floor and we did martial arts and we all learned how to defend ourselves and how to defend for others. Then we talk about who is our rock which means, who do we look up too and then we got on the computers and madeour first day blog :).
