Pitzer Pipeline “DAY 2”

yesterday we were asked about what our ideal physician patient relationship, what cultural information should doctors know about thier patients? what questions should doctors ask about Native culture and health? and Have you, or people you know had good or bad experiences with medical treatment.

well I barely visit my doctors so I don’t have any relationships whatsoever, what doctors should know about their patients is how they they see things culturally (I don’t know much of this stuff), doctors should ask how they use plant life as a medicine so they can help them, and I never had a bad experience with any doctor but it’s funny when I see my sister scared of a little needle. XD XD XD XD XD XD

Western University

My ideal physician is someone who is supportive, patient, has good energy and will try everything in their power to help you. The curltural information that doctors should know about patients is where theyre from, their beliefs in medicine, and their ethnic backgrounds. Everyone that I know has had good experiences with medical treatment.

Western University

I think the ideal physician patient relationship would be someone who is very supportive and caring. I would want my physician to be understanding to what you have to say and open to questions.  Cultural information doctors should know about their patients would be where they come from, what’s a high risk in their family and their ethnic background so the doctor can help prevent you and your family from those risks. My family has had good experiences with medical treatment from our doctor.

**Happy Tuesday**

So, yesterday the Native students visited Western University, which was FUN. I believe that a patient and a doctor should have just that, a doctor and patient relationship because imagine yourself as a doctor and you have a patient that you became close with close enough to be as though they were part of your family but say then this patient got extremely ill or got involved in a terrible car accident and you could not do and thing to cure them or save them would you have the strength to pronounce them dead? The cultural information that doctors should know is like the history like if heart disease runs in the family or something. Also me and Christa were like the only ones wearing high heals, that was fun ALSo. There were wonderful speakers and I personally thought that Janna was brilliant when she recognized the deer on ice scene was from the movie Bambi. It was like we shared the same thought but I didn’t speak up but Janna did.

Anyways today is a new day and as a student I know I’m ready to take on the day are YOU?

And the day begins!

Yesterday was the first day at camp, it was such a fun filled day with so many great speakers. We began our day at 7:30 a.m. and all had breakfast together. We then after began to blog which was many of our first time. The biggest event that had occurred was going to Western University, the experience for me was greater than words. Just to be on a college campus full of students who want to be apart of the medical field was a great sight. There were six guest speakers that spoke to us yesterday, they all brought something different to the table. The first guest speaker talked about diabetes and how it plays a role on our community. The second guest speaker were two ladies who talked about our health and what type of foods we should be eating; they showed us multiple ways to exercise without having to go outside. The third guest speaker was probably my absolute favorite, because it was more of a personal experience and he gave us his point of view on diabetes. He was first diagnosed with diabetes when he was seven, its crazy to know that he had diabetes for over 30 years now, that shows strength and courage to me. The last speaker was also one of my favorites, she was a young doctor who gave us her personal story about how she came about choosing to be a doctor and her life growing up. She gave us tips on how to pick our right career and exactly the steps it took to get as far as she did. At the end of the lecture she asked us questions that she wanted us to answer to help her out with the class she teaches. So here’s my feedback to her: Some good experiences I had with a doctor was when my Dad would visit his doctor she would constantly be on him about his health. She built a friendship with both me and him and constantly made him feel at his best. When my father passed away, she was so close to him that she felt a part of her leave, so after I gave her flowers to thank her for all she had done. A bad experience would be my doctor, he doesn’t bother to explain that symptom i may have bothering me at the time, that when I go home I have to do my own person research about it. I would love to have a friendship type of relationship because i believe it makes it easier for the patient to open up. Overall yesterday was a good day and something I won’t forget.

Luna’s Biography

Hello my name is Luna Galvan. I was born in Upland, California. My birthday is September 27th 1996. I’m the youngest out of my siblings, I have 3 older brothers and 1 sister. I’m a junior at Upland High School. I’m in track. I’m also in dance. I’m Navajo and Mexican. My dad is native and my mom is Mexican. I plan to graduate high school and go to a four year University. I plan on becoming a pediatrician. I’m glad to be here and experience all the new things about the medical field and college life.

Western University

What i liked about Western University was the nutrition and diabetes lecture. What my perspective of my ideal patient relationship would be to get to know my doctor better since they’re always the one asking me how I am i would want to know how they’re doing. Doctors should know about they’re family life and their patients background so they know exactly how a patient should be treated in case of a dangerous situation. Doctors should ask about the patients ancestors so they know what runs in the native patients blood line; because in some situations in skips a generation if the family has a certain disease or sickness. I have only had one bad experience with a hematologist because after i got my blood drawn from both arms they left me with a huge bruise on one of my arms.

WesternU first day(:

What is the ideal physician relationship for you?

The ideal relationship for me is for there to be a connection.  You have to be able to trust the person that is taking care of you and treating you for any sickness.  I would have to comfortably trust them with my life because that is basically what they are in charge of.

Good and bad experiences your family has had with the medical field.

There has not really been any bad experiences other then the sicknesses that could not be helped in my family.  The doctors that have worked with my family have always been very considerate and caring.

What cultural information should doctors know about their patients?

Before anything, doctors should know the background of the patient.l Not only where they come from but also the medical history behind the family.  Some cultures are more prone to certain diseases and sicknesses just because of the way they evolved.

What questions should doctors ask about Native culture and health?

Many Native families have diabetes in their family.  This is very important for doctors to ask about because there is a very high chance that the patient could also have the diabetes.  Doctors should ask about heart problems and any other kind of disease.
