Almost the Last Day

When I get home I can tell the people at my school that can spread the information about the great experience I had with the Pipeline Program. I would be able to the principal or one of the councilors that promote college programs for students.

We Are Here!

My ancestors are an imperative aspect of my indigenous culture. My ancestors are important to me as they are a part of who I am. If it were not for many of my ancestors I would not be the successful person I am today. One such ancestor is Cuauahtemoc who was tortured and killed because he took his position as tlatoani (speaker/leader of the People) seriously and didn’t give the Spaniards what they wanted. Having this knowledge about my ancestors, that they fought for our People’s lives, helps motivate me to live a meaningful life so our People may continue to flourish and grow. I will not let their deaths be in vain.
Another important aspect of my culture is our ceremonies which help unite my People. Participating in ceremony prepares you to lead a successful and meaningful life because you are taught respect, responsibility, and love for yourself and your people. One of my favorite ceremonies is that of the day of the dead which lasts multiple days and is a celebration of both life and death (both of which are equally important in my culture). We remember those who have passed through altars, dances, and songs while celebrating those of us who still live. Ceremonies serve a greater purpose in my indigenous culture as they not only unite us but allow us as a People, who have struggled, to be inspired and feel joy in who we are despite what has happened to our People. Participating in ceremony in the 21st century is a powerful method of decolonization.

Language (written/spoken and pictorgraphic) is also an important aspect of my culture as it not only allows us to speak to those who only speak our mother tongue but allows us to understand important documents and pieces left by our ancestors. Language serves as a web which connects us to our past, present, and future. Being able to speak, read, and write in my mother tongue, I believe is a factor that helped get me into UCLA. I believe it can do the same for others as multilingualism is beautiful and admired. It helps people lead a more successful, meaningful, and productive life. As an indigenous person being able to speak my mother tongue gives my pride. I am able to connect with my ancestors, culture, and People on a different level.

Cultural knowledge and participation in ceremony helped prepare me for college as it help strengthen me mentally and spiritually. Being strong mentally and spiritually are key in persevering in life as it is filled with hurdles and barriers. Also, my cultural knowledge and participation in ceremony provided me with a higher level of consciousness which many where shocked by at the univeristy. Most importantly, I believe because of my cultural knowledge and participation in ceremony I am more motivated to come back home and give back to my People. I know what needs to be done and I will do all in my ability to contribute to the growth and strengthening of my People. All indigenous youth must attain cultural knowledge and participate in ceremony as it will help uplift them and will do nothing but good in furthering them and their People.

FRIDAY

1. Common app was helpful for applying to colleges because it gave me an idea of the tuition and the costs of living at college. Applying for college is going to be an interesting process. Thinking of the common application as a practice run for the real applications . Practice makes perfect.

2. Students need to have the colleges they want to go to in mind cause if you just go on the common app website without an outline then its kind of pointless. If you have a few colleges in mind thats why the site is there.

3. Its important to research colleges before because you have to think of what kind of climate you want to live in and how far you want to move away from home. You want to look into how many people are in the school has. You want to focus on what you need to give your 100% focus on education.

4. It is so dramatically important to write a great college essay because it determines if you get in top college or not. There are many things you have to have to get in to college but a college essay lets the college know how well prepared you are and how badly you want to get in.

5. Some tips for writing a college essay are use proper english. Don’t write like you are having having a conversation because you don’t want them to think that you don’t know how to write proper.

6. Writing your own story can be scary but you have to remember that no one is there to laugh at you or make fun of you they just want to see how you have struggled and then came through all of that to become the person you are today.

2 days left (sad life rn)

The common application is something that helps you prepare or find the right college that fits what your looking for. Before you fill out the common application you at least have to have an idea of what you want to study and what school or area you to be in or around (small or big classes, city or country). It is important to research different colleges before so that you will have an idea to what the different colleges offer. Its important to write a good essay because the grades are not just the only thing that can get you into a college because if u have a strong and powerful story that is also a good help. Have more then one person to look over your essay and use smart words. Some things that can catch the readers attention is write from your heart and tell the true story.2

The Spoken Words

1) The common application is helpful by showing the school that you want to apply to’s prompts ahead of time so you know what kind of questions to answer. It’ll show you what they want in a student and how much the college costs.

2) Students need to prepare by finding all your important materials like social security, grades for all four years of high school, birth certificate, etc..

3) It’s important to research colleges before you apply because you can find what you need and call the lines for questions you may have. Asking questions for scholarships or anything like that is very important.

4) It’s important to write a strong essay so the Board of Admission can get a feel for what you aspire to be and get a feel for you as a person. The more they get to know you ahead of time the better. Some tips for writing a great essay is to include as much detail of you as possible. While adding some of your personality to the story. Not too much though.

5)  Some tips for telling your own story is to make sure it comes from the heart. Give it some emotion the readers can feel. Not too much feel though, don’t wanna creep them out.

#IdleNoMore~ Joye

Almost everyday, our crew has been attending to “Common Applications” which makes you rethink what your “game plan” will be.  There are several ideas of what to choose as a career and to study on.  This almost daily class has been inspiring each of us individually to find the best college that suites our needs.  There are many different types of colleges that I am considering at the moment.  I’ve determined that I’ll plan on becoming a veterinarian but this ideal may change in the mysterious incoming circumstances.  There can only be one decision but I understand that I have plenty of time to rethink things.  When applying for college, this class may help since it gives us insight of what will be on the application.  Shelva Hurley has persuade most of us that this need for further education is in one of the highest importance in succeeding in life.

When finishing the common application, there are some necessities that are required to be completed.  For one, you have to determine the college you want to attend to.  There are various colleges that specify in certain studies; in example, if I were to attend a college and I still want to become a veterinarian, I’d need to attend a college or university specially obtaining the studies of life science or animal science.  They’d ask you a range of questions reflecting on your life and personality.

Researching for colleges should be important while applying for a college because there are costs to attending colleges, stats to reassure your graduating percentage, the majors you may want.  All those are only a partial ration of what components are distributed throughout an entire college curriculum.

Writing a solid college essay is mainly giving you professors and the board of admission. If you have an inner network and if they like what you write, they see where you come from and see the real potential you may obtain.

If you have a connection to your professors, they see you are trying to become a good student and when they write about you when you are trying to get a job, they’ll have a good context to write off of.  You may as well make friends with your professors rather than enemies.

ON THE GRIND

1)The common app is helpful in so many ways, one way is you can look up a college your interested in and it has all the information ranging from when you can send the application in and it also has all the majors.

2) What students need to do to prepare for the common app is know where they live, an email, number the would be easy to contact and just things like that.

3) The reason why it’s important to research on what college you want to attend because you might thing it’s one thing when it’s another. For instance you might think the school’s football team isn’t as beast a you thought they were.

4) The reason why it’s important to write a strong essay for your college is because just the way you word things might change there mind on excepting you.

5) Some tips on how to write a good, strong essay would be rereading it over many times not only that but letting others read it because they might see mistakes you don’t see. Another good way would be not to write about anything that is boring or too long because the reader had a life to.

6) Some tips on how to engage the reader would always say something that would catch there attention.

Maya’s 13th Day

The common application is the application process used by the majority of top colleges and universities to get into an undergraduate program, and is the most helpful thing I’ve used to find and compare colleges. When I use the Common Application, I legitimately feel like I’m actually making progress towards my educational goals. You can see location, offered majors, tuition, and much more. If you enter information about the major you’re looking into, the area code you want to be near, and the parts of college that are most important to you, the Common Application will even show you colleges and the percentage you match up with them. To prepare to fill out the common app you must first make an account. It’s also helpful to have a major in mind, and to know what kind of school you’d like to attend. I’d personally want to major in art with a possible double major in psychology, and attend a small liberal arts school. It’s incredibly important to research colleges before you apply. If you don’t know the kind of college or what it offers, it’s  a waste of your money and application time if you end up realizing it’s not what you had in mind. For instance, I probably wouldn’t want to attend Cornell University because I feel more comfortable in small, intimate teaching settings, and would like to be closer to home. One of the most essential things in applying to colleges is submitting a strong college essay.  The top two factors colleges take into account are high school GPA and your admission essay. In many colleges, admission essays are held more important than SAT scores. So if you aren’t a strong test taker, you can still help your chances of getting into a college by writing a solid essay. I’ve realized that I write the strongest essays when I’m writing something I’m passionate about, or something that is deeply personal. Luckily, unlike many high school essays, the Common Application asks for just that. They want to know about you, and what you are going to bring to their campus. This is your chance to not only flaunt yourself (for the best possible reason), but also to really speak about what is close to your heart. So write about something you would fight for. Write about something that people need to know. Write about something that is important- to you. And write about it with the same passion that you have in yourself.

July 24th

  1. The “common app” is an application used for private colleges I think. It is pretty much just questions asked on most college applications. One of the topics is writing about your own interests or something along those lines, which is the topic I used.
  2. Students need to prepare a story about them that is important to fill out the common application.
  3. It’s important to research colleges before applying to them because it would be good to know how well their classes are and what majors or minors they have.
  4. It’s important to write a strong college essay so whoever reads it will know you’re one of the right people to go there.
  5. Some tips for writing a great college essay is to have it peer edited by old teachers.
  6. A way to tell my story and engage the reader’s is just by being honest, just typing out my thoughts and fixing what needs to be fixed later.
