Joye’s College Survival Guide

During these few days I’ve been in Pitzer College Pipeline (which I think is very fun), I’ve develop a immense interest with common application workshop because it taught me to better understand the importance of the future.  In this class, we looked up colleges matching with our skills and future careers.  I’ve noticed that very few people accepted that the concept revolving around the idea of college isn’t on the top of their list.  There are very few rules to follow when thinking about the incoming jobs.  First off, you’d need to try your best.  I often have problems while doing this because my laziness gets the best of me and I’ll not try.  Many people can relate with that.  What I mean by not being lazy, I don’t mean to just exercising (which I need to do 😉 ).  Everyone needs to do homework and participate into many other extracurricular activities which would help you while applying for a college.  You’d also need to make the appropriate life choices without following people’s decisions because it’s best if you become your own person.  When looking for the right colleges, you can also go to these two different websites. “Commonapp.org” and “collegeview.com”.

In this new community at Pitzer, they help me get better ideals about future decisions.  My parents and Mo’a inspire me to continue towards college.  Surprisingly, my siblings inspire me also in a indirect way.  There are many things that encourage me to do things yet I can’t explain them very well.  I have difficulty expressing certain ideals that come to my thoughts yet I’d eventually allow those thoughts to be typed or written in better eloquence than my current style.

I’ve been trying to contain all the talents and natural skills that I posses and I’d rather become more decisive in my studying choices.  Although it’s very tempting into giving in into laziness, I’d rather  continue onward to be able to have a secure and successful future.  There are still thousands of little things that may swerve my perspective into the other direction yet I’ll still try to become more confident into what I’ll like to become.  Attending to this pipeline was one of my decisions influenced by the thought of college.

Today, I’ve been able to relate to the science classes and I think I may start looking into dedicating my studies towards that.  To become a veterinarian, I know that you’d have to take a science class which would help you getting better into that career.  I’ll make my decision later or eventually after the pipeline.

Day 4

The two recourses that were very useful were commonapp.org, collegeview.com. People that are preparing me for college would have to be my parents since they always tell me to push it in school. Another person I would like to recognize is an elder kim marcus. Also when I’m at school the teachers around Noli are very helpful. I’m helping my self prepare for college by asking people who had experience how it was and how it affected them. Well where I’m from not a lot of people get the chance to go to college so i think just by going would be inspiring to others and my siblings as well.

Reflection: Today was interesting because we had a meeting about lady’s that gone missing in canada and people have found remaining’s of them. It’s sad but it also make me want to speak up for theres families.

The Day to be Excellent to Each Other (Every Day)

1.) Some resources that I can use to help me go to college are some people in my community, my brothers (ultimately close friends), my family, and my Pitzer family. They support me in every way possible.

2.) My freshman mentors at my school are helping me prepare of what’s to come in high school and what exactly colleges are looking for. Same with Pitzer. They’re giving me more information than my freshman mentors. Waaaaaaayyyyy more info.

3.) I’m helping myself by preparing myself mentally by keeping myself up to date with I’m going to study in college.

4.) I will help and encourage my friends and siblings to go to college by telling them and recommending that they find a program like Pitzer or Pitzer itself.

5.) Today instead of exercising, all the guys helped prepare breakfast for everyone. Juan, Tecpatl, and I made blueberry pancakes for everyone. ‘Twas an excellent breakfast of champions. In our English class we drew pictures of idols that could’ve been someone better than they are right now. A way back Wednesday our Shakespeare teacher from last year came back with some more Shakespeare, but was a little bit more darker this time. Our elders talked about the missing and murdered indigenous women again tonight. It was very meaningful and sad, but its the truth that needed to be said.

Cecelia Was here #4

Resources where and who I find support to go to college from;

1. The Lummi youth academy, My tribe, and my family

2. My mom really supports my goal of becoming a nurse. along with a lot of other family members of mine. I have a tutor named Amy that really helps me with my school work, and she motivates and inspires me to be a good person, and go far in life.

3. I am helping myself prepare for college by learning and doing what it takes to get to where i want to be. I am staying confident with my self and how smart I am. I am begining to become more organized and responsible with my actions, and I am more open to listening to people who have been in my position, and have turned out to be very successful.

4. I will help and encourage my friends to go to college by supporting them when they’re struggling, I will introduce them to the resources I have.

5. My day was good, lol i kept nodding out. I really liked going to check out pomona college, and learn a lot about c. elegans, I couldn’t seem to pick one of them up, i think i killed one, but yeah I’m tired, but it was a lovely day :))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Resources and Support to get to College

You’re resources on going to college is first up to you. You’ll always have friends and family to help guide you. You’re gonna have to ask yourself “is attending college important in my life?” You are the only one to decide to continue your education. When you have decided to attend college you must have a plan and ask questions to prepare yourself on what to expect. I have chosen to further my education by being involved academically, socially, culturally and athletically. This gives me a sense of motivation and support from my peers. I accepted the challenge to go to college and use the best of my abilities to become a role model for my siblings and Native youth enrolled in my tribe. I encourage the other Indigenous Youth!

Reflection:

Today was truly heartfelt from listening to the elders who’ve traveled far to be here with us. I am truly grateful to have them around and continuing their stories and traditions. Also supporting us to do the same.

Squidnuggets

1) Scholarships, can help if they attend Lummi Nation School are able to apply, what I know so far.

2)A community member that prepares me to go to college is Pitzer Pipeline and my circle of friends Been chilling with them for 9 years!

3) I am preparing myself for college by mentally telling myself that I am able to get myself through high school that it is important to my friends and family.

4) i will encourage my friends by telling them that they can be successful if they do soo…and sooo…

Today:

Today I felt energetic even though everyone else was tired. tomorrow I am excited and tired right now. Today’s activities were fun like acting all the conversations were random and funny.

Some resources that will help me are connections, support, and financial aid. In my community a lot of tribal members support my sisters and I for a lot, including our education; my friends support me when i come to them with problems and support me with my school choices. I am attending the pipeline program to prepare for college, its super tiring but an amazing experience I have learned so much in the past couple of days, more than I’ve learned in school (well I’ve learned way more about my aboriginal side here at Pitzer); I will also be attending Running start and hopefully have my associates by the time i graduate high school. Lately I have been supporting my best friend and helping her decide what she wants to do, her problem is that she won’t be able to attend college because of money problems. I’ve been supporting her and helping her decide on what she wants to do in the future. With my sisters I have always been supportive even if my younger sister likes to copy me and my dreams 🙂 .

Today was really tiring, i went to bed late last night because I was finishing my laundry and we had sun rise ceremony this morning so we had to wake up at six in the morning and I’ve been on autopilot all day. I feel like a Zombie. But I listened and I learned and wrote down so much notes in the Western U class. We got to pick up microscopic worms and place them in bacteria petri dishes, even though you could barely see them without a magnifying glass they still creeped me out. And we got to be artistic today which was really great and it kept me awake. But it was an awesome day over all and I can’t wait to lie down. Only to get up early in the morning again… :/

Fourth Day For Maya

I believe that some of the main resources that are really helpful for me are actually the ones offered at my school. Speaking to your counselor regularly about your education and career plans lets them know how to hep you. My parents and Scott are one of my main supporters, and no matter what path I choose to take in life they support me to the fullest. They believe that I can get into a 4 year college, and tell me that even if i don’t and up going through community college or taking my first year off they’ll still support me. It is so good to feel that I have a strong support system. I’m also trying to help myself prepare for college by trying to practice better habits, visiting colleges, and doing activities and programs such as the Pipeline. I know my sister doesn’t need an encouraging to go to college, but I hope that she see’s what I’m doing and that I am trying and I’m going to try a lot harder. I really want to succeed.

Today was my fourth day at Pipeline. I’m feeling really good, and I am making friends. I got to hold Rose’s bird today! Instead of Common Apps, we went to Pomona College today and did a neuroscience lab on microscopic worms. It was actually super interesting and everyone was incredibly nice. But we had to walk back to Pitzer, and I was sleepy and wearing flip-flops. Yuck. Once we got to Pitzer I headed straight to the mounds and Ninaya and I passed out on the hammock for a half hour while Mika caught up on her reading.  Today we had our first Shakespeare class! You know that whole “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” About a man. Mr. Wachtel is a really good storyteller! I looked like I was falling asleep due to my nap but I promise, I was listening.

Then we had dinner, and there were veggie wraps for me ad ma vegetarian sister (: thanks Scott! But one of the most impacting periods of my day was the Cultural Programming with Rose Henry and Joe. Everything they told me was completely new to me; I never knew of these horrific tragedies which have occurred. I didn’t even know what residential schools were, and the cultural genocide which ensued. Our elders are so strong to go through so much, and then focus all their energy on helping others. I’d like to say a thank you for my opportunity of being here, and everyone who makes Pipeline fun and safe.
